Online science fiction cake decorating competition

Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, this is your chance to create a show-stopping cake inspired by robots, aliens, futuristic worlds and beyond.

How it works

• Show off your imagination and decorating skills to create a spectacular finished piece. 
• Every part of the cake and decorations must be edible. 
• You can use store-bought or home-made cakes. 
• You can work solo or as a group.
• Parents/carers and children can collaborate.
• This competition is open to people of all ages.

How to enter

• Entries are accepted until 30 July 2025. 
• Submit your name/s, cake title, 3-5 photos, 1 short video and a short paragraph. 
• Email your entry to cakes@willoughby.nsw.gov.au
• 3 photos must show the decorating process, from beginning to end, to prove that it’s your work. 
• 1-2 photos should showcase the finished cake (we’ll select our favourite for social media and our website).
• If your cake has unique interior design or special layers, please include additional photos of the sliced cake to showcase it. 
• The video should be no longer than 20 seconds and must capture a 360-degree view of the cake for judging.
• The paragraph (150 words max) should explain how your cake fits the sci-fi theme and highlight any unique details or special techniques used.

Competition details

• This is an online only competition – no need to deliver your cake!
• Selected entries may be featured on our website and social media. By entering the competition, you consent to the use of your cake photos and title for promotional purposes.
• Willoughby City Council staff and their immediate families are not eligible to enter this competition.

Judging panel and criteria

Entries will be evaluated by a panel of sci-fi lovers, including:

• a Willoughby City Library staff member
• a Willoughby City Council Arts and Culture team representative
• a member of the Speculative Fiction Group at Willoughby City Library.

Entries will be judged on:

• creativity – How imaginative is your design?
• theme relevance – Does it capture the sci-fi theme in a spectacular way?

Prizes

$100 gift vouchers will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place.
