In conversation with Sora Kim-Russell, an award-winning translator of ‘The Plotters’ by author Un-su Kim.

In recent years, the translators’ visibility in the publishing world is increasing and beginning with a push towards naming translators on book covers. In addition, the field of literary translation has been the site of dynamic dialogue between authors, translators, readers, and publishers on what it means for a work to be brought into another language.

Sora’s translation of 'The Plotters' by Kim Un-su won the 2019 LTI Korea Translation Award and was longlisted for the 2020 Dublin Literary Award.

Synopsis of 'The Plotters'

Behind every assassination, there is an anonymous mastermind - a plotter - working in the shadows. Plotters quietly dictate the moves of the city’s most dangerous criminals, but their existence is little more than legend. Just who are the plotters? And more importantly, what do they want? Cracking with action and filled with unforgettable characters, 'The Plotters' is a deeply entertaining thriller that soars with the soul, wit, and lyricism of real literary craft.

Sora Kim-Russell, a mixed-race, is one of the most famous Korean-to-English literary translator as well as a writer. She has published fourteen books in translation, along with numerous short story publications.

Her translation works include ‘The Hole’ by Pyun Hye-young which won the 2017 Shirley Jackson Award for best novel; Pyun’s short fiction have appeared in The New Yorker and in Harper’s Magazine; and works by other prominent writers and early modern writers.

Sora has taught literary translation at Ewha Womans University and the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, served as a prose mentor for the American Literary Translators Association, and taught at the Bread Loaf Translators Conference. She tweets sporadically at @spacenakji.
