Originally Sharpe’s Quarry, then the location of White’s Transit Company buses, the site later became the location of Sir Edward Lees Hallstrom’s refrigerator factory. Sir Edward was the manager of Taronga Park Zoo from 1948 to 1959 and later honorary director of the Zoo. The first Silent Knight refrigerator was made by his factory in 1923. The factory produced 1200 refrigerators a week at its peak. Customers could choose a gas, electric or kerosene powered model. The factory was sold in 1974 and home units were built on the site.
