St Stephen's Anglican Church

Corner Sydney Street & Mowbray Road, Willoughby

St Stephen’s Anglican Church was dedicated on 19 April 1884. Designed by Edmund Blackett and his son Arthur, it was built from locally quarried sandstone by the stonemason Alexander Simpson. The northeast corner was not built to the original plan. The church is notable for the pillars supporting the arches of the clerestory walls, each constructed of one 182.88cm X 50.8cm piece of local sandstone. It was thought to be the first building using this construction in NSW. St Stephen’s replaces an earlier Chapel of Ease, part of which can still be seen adjoining the western side of the church.
