Portrait Lighting Workshop

MainImage.jpg
Improve the look of your people photography and explore different styles of portrait lighting. All levels welcome.

Topics covered will include a brief description of the properties of light that can be used to creatively vary the look of portraits including:

• Revealing shape and form through the intensity and direction of light

• Understanding the contrast of light sources and the causes of this contrast and how to modify the look

• Understanding light falloff and using it to create drama or to give more even lighting depending on your desired outcome.

We will also explore how to place lighting and models to achieve the following looks:

• Hollywood or butterfly lighting

• Loop lighting

• Rembrant lighting

• Split lighting

• Short lighting and broad lighting.

We will model for each other and we will be using LED lights fitted with diffusers. This constant light source will allow us to see where the light and shadows fall on our subjects. These principles can be extended to other situation and can be easily applied to light sources such as window light or speedlites.

Please bring a camera (including smartphones) and be prepared to take turns modelling for other participants.
